Why does the Krebs cycle need oxygen if it never uses O₂ directly?
Because it depends on NAD⁺ and FAD being recycled by the electron transport chain, and that chain only runs when oxygen is the final electron acceptor1. Without O₂, NADH builds up and the cycle stalls2.
